The Elizabeth Taylor Diamond
The Elizabeth Taylor Diamond, formerly known as the Krupp Diamond, is a is a very large (33.19 carats) Asscher cut diamond. It was given as a gift to Elizabeth Taylor by her husband, Richard Burton, in 1968.
Mr. Burton purchased the diamond from Parke-Bernet Galleries, and was reported to have paid $305,000 for the diamond in ’68. It was, at the time, the highest price ever paid st auction for a diamond ring.
In 2011, the diamond was sold at a Christie’s auction, as part of Elizabeth Taylor’s collection of jewelry for over $8.8 million. The pre-auction estimate of the diamond’s worth was $2.5 million to $3.5 million.
The Gemological Institute of America certificate states that the diamond has a color rating of D (colorless), and a clarity of VS1. An accompanying report indicated that the clarity may actually be internally flawless. In addition, the diamond has been classified as Type IIa. The Type IIa diamond is the most chemically pure type of diamond and generally has the highest optical transparency.
